Is Freedom Important?

In today’s society there is so much talk about the economy, gun control, abortion, etc.  It is right that we do discuss the important issues of the day, however, I want to challenge you to think a bit deeper.  Think in terms of the principles that underlie the issues.  Here is what I mean:  if we know the principles of those we elect then we will know how they will vote on the issues.  Issues come and go, but principles shouldn’t change.  That is why I want to challenge people to think in terms of principles instead of issues.  One of the most fundamental principles to the strenght of our Republic is that of freedom.

You say freedom and you get as many definitions as there are people in the room.  While the word may be difficul to define, it is not so difficult to see when it is under attack.  How should we, as Christians, view freedom?  I submit that it is one of the most fundamental principles of our faith.  Freedom isn’t a secular word.  Freedom isn’t something that either the Republicans or Democrats have a monopoly on.  Freedom isn’t something that politicians can throw around during election years.  It is one of the fundamental principles that move men to give up their lives.  Consider the soldiers of the revolution fighting for freedom from the tyranny of the crown.  Consider the black soldiers of the civil war fighting for freedom from slavery.  Consider the boys who stormed the beach of Normandy who were fighting for freedom from the Nazis.  Consider our savior, Jesus Christ, who fought for our freedom from sin.

All of these examples demonstrate how a fundamental principle will cause men to act.  Jesus died on the cross so that we could be free.  Soldiers died on the battle field so that future generations might be free.  That is why I submit that freedom is at the very core of the principles we should look at when electing leaders.  Freedom is a Christian principle.  Galatians 5:1—it was for freedom that Christ set us free.  If Christ believed in the issue of freedom shouldn’t we?  Shouldn’t we challenge leaders of both parties to follow the principle of freedom?  Too often we vote for a leader based on charisma, or promises instead of principles.

That is why I want to challenge all Americans, but especially Christians, to re-evaluate the importance of Freedom in today’s society.  I believe that if we can get back to the principle of freedom we can fix the lingering issues of our day.  Do you agree that we have lost the importance of freedom in today’s society?  yes or no, we would love to hear your comments.  Post and let us know what you are thinking.

Until next time,

  1. For 22 years I served in the U.S. Navy to fight if necessary for our freedom. JESUS, with his Father’s guidance, actually is the one who gives us our freedom, not me or my fellow servicemen & women. I only fought so that we might have the freedom to serve and praise Him !
