What’s Our Purpose?

Why are we here? What’s our mission in life? What is our purpose in life as Christians? It is my deepest prayer that our few moments together will be an encouragement to us, but yet challenge us to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in a great way.
What’s our mission? Why are we on this planet? Remember, even Jesus had a mission. We read in Luke 4 verses 18 and 19 that Jesus read from the Old Testament book of Isaiah which says, “the spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” He added, “today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Jesus also stated his mission in Matthew 20:28, saying, “the son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many”. Jesus had a mission. He came to serve and give His life on the cross to cover our sins and extent to us the gift of eternal life.
What’s our mission? Why are we here? I believe our mission in life is three fold.
First…to love the Lord our God with all our body mind soul and spirit. That is, to give ourselves 100 per cent to learning as much about God as we can and to put Him first in our lives. Matthew 6:33 states, “seek first the kingdom of God and all these others things will be added to you”. Let us give God our best and our all.
Secondly, Jesus said, to “love our neighbor” as ourselves. We are to follow the example of Jesus in His mission of serving and not being served. Look around. There are people all around us who are in need of our attention and care. People who are hurting, lonely, depressed, filled with worry and anxiety. We are here to love and serve.
Thirdly, I believe, our mission is follow the command of Jesus in Matthew 28:19, where he tells us “go into all the world and make disciples”. To interest people in Him and His teachings. That is the great commission. He didn’t call us to “plant churches”, but “make disciples”. However, planting churches may aid us in “making disciples”.
The great commandment to love the Lord Your God with all your heart. The great commission…as you journey in your life, tell others of Jesus Christ and disciple them into knowing more about the good news of the our Lord. He came lived on this planet, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead the 3rd day and someday is coming back.
I’m reminding each of us that our mission, our purpose is to love God, love others, and tell everyone about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. That’s our purpose. Let’s be about the King’s business.
God bless,
