From KOB TV in Albuquerque………..

A 74 year-old Albuquerque woman is recovering at UNM Hospital after police said she was struck by a stray bullet outside a local church. It happened Sunday afternoon at San Jose Parish near Broadway and Gibson Boulevard.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 found out the woman was just standing outside the church, talking to a group of people when a bullet literally fell from the sky and struck her head.

Police said that woman is Merced Estrada. KOB learned no one heard any gunshots go off so right now, it’s a mystery how this happened.

KOB spoke to her daughter-in-law over the phone. The family said it’s a miracle she wasn’t seriously hurt or even killed. KOB also spoke to a parishioner who was standing just steps away from Estrada.

As soon as she realized what had happened, she was reminded of the stabbings that happened a couple of weeks ago at St. Jude Thaddeus that sent three people to the hospital.

“That’s the first thing that came to my mind but, you know, it’s not the same but you think and you said, this wasn’t intentional. No?” said Esther Garcia.

Police said it looked like somebody must have fired a gun nearby and that the bullet just happened to land in front of the church.
