A push to legalize gay marriage in the United Kingdom is creating a stir both inside and outside parliament.

The new gay marriage bill, which was debated over a two-day period in the lower house this week, has left many questioning Prime Minister David Cameron’s credibility.

Throngs of Christians gathered to pray and show their support for traditional marriage during the debate, and critics say they aren’t alone.

Many conservative lawmakers also oppose the bill, with almost 40 percent of Cameron’s own party breaking ranks with the prime minister to support alternative measures.

British media reports the issue is threatening to split Cameron’s government.

But according to Reuters, the prime minister remains “relaxed” about the situation, viewing the lawmakers’ dissention as evidence of a healthy British democracy.
