ZETA DRUG CARTEL LEADERS CONVICTED IN MONEY-LAUNDERING SCHEME
José Treviño Morales, brother of Zeta Mexican drug cartel bosses, along with three other defendants, were convicted yesterday, May 9, 2013, of laundering $20 million in drug mon…ey through bogus companies buying race horses and ranches, much of their activity in New Mexico.  Also mentioned was the cartel’s involvement in fixing the 2010 Ruidoso All American Futurity quarter-horse race, where their horse was a 22-to-1 underdog.  Also mentioned was their use of performance enhancing illegal drugs in that and other races.
It is common for gambling to attract rats, but New Mexico’s racetracks have now been proven to attract the worst of the worst.  That the Zeta drug cartel had tentacles into New Mexico horse racing should be a reminder to the politicians and the citizens of the state that gambling is no ordinary business and corrupts the sport, the politicians and the state.
A New York Times article on the conviction of these monsters can be read here.
