KOB TV is reporting that The Albuquerque City Clerk’s Office has verified enough petition signatures to put a late-term abortion ban up for a vote in the city.
Many Christians have been working hard to put an end to late term abortions in Albuquerque. The city has the unofficial title of the abortion capitol of the United States.
What is at stake are the lives of children who are considered viable if delivered at any US hospital, but are not given the right to live if their mother chooses to have them killed.
The clerk’s office confirmed to KOB Eyewitness News 4 that the city accepted the 12,261st signature on Tuesday, which is the exact number needed to take the issue to the voters.
The ban won’t be seen in the city’s general election in October, however. The clerk decided last week that her office wouldn’t have enough time to get the issue to the city councilors, who have to approve a resolution in order to get the question on the ballot. The clerk’s office had only counted 9,000 of the 12,000 signatures at that time.
Voters could still decide on the ban through a special election, but that would cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The city council will still need to give the final approval to put the issue on the ballot.
