A bus bomb attack in Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, failed to produce any casualties on Sunday as alert citizens notified the driver of a suspicious package leading to the buses evacuation before the bomb exploded. Although not claiming responsibility, the Islamist terror militias Hamas and Islamic Jihad issued statements that they “welcomed” the attack, which they declared to be a “response to the crimes of the occupation.” An Islamic Jihad source told the PalestinianMa’an news agency that he hoped this attack “could usher the resumption of suicide attacks.” He added that his organization and others like it had a responsibility to protect the Palestinian people from “Israel’s crimes, US support for the occupation and Arab impotence.” The attack was condemned by most Western governments.
