It is just another stupendously, outrageously, beautiful morning here despite the chill. We have a wonderful 36 degrees outside here in Albuquerque and no wind to bring that down this morning, although we’re only expecting a high of 43 today with partly cloudy skies. There are possible snow showers to the northern and eastern New Mexico areas with only a very slight chance of flurries here in the big city. The good news is that with the cooler weather now that it’s winter, as I drove by the Forrest Service Headquarters around the corner yesterday, I noticed our fire hazard warning level is down to moderate!
I was going to ask for a special prayer for my wife this morning after having her car break down at the shopping mall last night. Her car just went off warranty, (of course), and her car stalled right in the middle of the intersection where she waited in the cold for an hour for a tow truck to get there. Fortunately, the driver was obviously a Godly man and the second her got there, he made sure she got in his truck where he turned the heater up to full blast for her before he even looked at the car. Hopefully, our mechanic can make it around today to take a look at it for her.
However, our bigger prayer today is for our Pastor Dewey. While he is traveling south to Magdalena to conduct services for Pastor Paul who is traveling in the Ohio area to visit relatives for the Christmas holidays, his precious wife Sharon will be taking their precious puppy Reno to the veterinarian for a procedure after being diagnosed with cancer this last week. It does appear the cancer is isolated to a very specific location and we’re praying for both a safe trip for the Pastor in addition to a successful procedure for Reno. As an avid dog/animal lover myself, I know just exactly how much the Pastor & Sharon love their Reno and how hard it is to watch one of your precious four-legged loved ones when they’re not well. We talked yesterday and as we frequently do, he summarized God’s Word that he’s going to share with the wonderful folks at Pastor Paul’s church and they are in for a real treat today. Please pray over healing for Reno and that Pastor has a safe trip and for God to give his wife Sharon the strength she’ll need to take care of their Reno. I’ll be on standby for her in case she needs a little extra support during the Pastor’s absence.
So, What Happened Today In 1890:
United States Army Massacres Indians At Wounded Knee 
On this day in 1890, in the final chapter of America’s long Indian wars, the U.S. Cavalry kills 146 Sioux at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.
Throughout 1890, the U.S. government worried about the increasing influence at Pine Ridge of the Ghost Dance spiritual movement, which taught that Indians had been defeated and confined to reservations because they had angered the gods by abandoning their traditional customs. Many Sioux believed that if they practiced the Ghost Dance and rejected the ways of the white man, the gods would create the world anew and destroy all non-believers, including non-Indians. On December 15, 1890, reservation police tried to arrest Sitting Bull, the famous Sioux chief, who they mistakenly believed was a Ghost Dancer, and killed him in the process, increasing the tensions at Pine Ridge.
On December 29, the U.S. Army’s 7th cavalry surrounded a band of Ghost Dancers under the Sioux Chief Big Foot near Wounded Knee Creek and demanded they surrender their weapons. As that was happening, a fight broke out between an Indian and a U.S. soldier and a shot was fired, although it’s unclear from which side. A brutal massacre followed, in which it’s estimated almost 150 Indians were killed (some historians put this number at twice as high), nearly half of them women and children. The cavalry lost 25 men.
The conflict at Wounded Knee was originally referred to as a battle, but in reality it was a tragic and avoidable massacre. Surrounded by heavily armed troops, it’s unlikely that Big Foot’s band would have intentionally started a fight. Some historians speculate that the soldiers of the 7th Cavalry were deliberately taking revenge for the regiment’s defeat at Little Bighorn in 1876. Whatever the motives, the massacre ended the Ghost Dance movement and was the last major confrontation in America’s deadly war against the Plains Indians.
Conflict came to Wounded Knee again in February 1973 when it was the site of a 71-day occupation by the activist group AIM (American Indian Movement) and its supporters, who were protesting the U.S. government’s mistreatment of Native Americans. During the standoff, two Indians were killed, one federal marshal was seriously wounded and numerous people were arrested.

1170 – Archbishop Thomas Becket is brutally murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by four knights of King Henry II of England apparently on orders of the King. The Christian community around the world was shocked and in 1173 Becket was canonized a Catholic Saint;
1607 – Indian Chief Powhatan spares John Smith’s life after the pleas of his daughter Pocahontas;
1778 – British Lt. Col. Archibald Campbell & his forces of 3,600 troops launch a surprise attack on American forces defending Savannah Georgia. Outnumbering American forces of only 900, the British easily captured the city which they controlled until they left of their own accord on July 11, 1782;
1808 – Future President Andrew Jackson is born in Raleigh North Carolina. In February of 1868 the House of Representatives charged Johnson with 11 articles of impeachment for vague “high crimes and misdemeanors”. By a final vote of 35 to 19, Johnson was acquitted & finished out his term;
1813 – British forces burn Buffalo New York during the War of 1812;
1845 – Six months after Congress of the Republic of Texas accepts U.S. annexation of the territory, Texas is admitted into the United States as the 28th state;
1849 – Gas lighting is installed in the White House;
1851 – 1st Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) opens in Boston Massachusetts;
1852 – Emma Snodgrass is arrested in Boston Massachusetts for wearing pants;
1862 – 1st bowling ball is invented;
1862 – At the battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, Union Gen. William Sherman is thwarted in his attempt to capture Vicksburg Mississippi;
1876 – A bridge in Ashtabula Ohio collapses causing a train to fall into a gorge killing 80 passengers;
1940 – London England suffers its worst & most devastating air raid when Germans firebomb the city;
1952 – 1st transistorized hearing aid is offered for sale in Elmsford New York;
1956 – President Dwight Eisenhower asks Congress for the authority to oppose Soviet aggression in the Middle East. Just days before an official announcement is to be issued by the Eisenhower administration, the New York Times leaks the news that the United States is preparing a major policy statement on the Middle East. In the wake of heightened tensions in the area caused by the French-British-Israeli invasion of Egypt in November, the announcement was greeted with caution both at home and abroad. According to the newspaper, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was set to appear before Congress and ask for two things. First, Congressional support of a declaration by the Eisenhower administration that the United States would oppose any Soviet military intervention in the Middle East. Second, Dulles would ask Congress to establish a major economic assistance plan for the Middle East;
1965 – A Christmas truce is observed in Vietnam while President Johnson tries to get the North Vietnamese to the bargaining table;
1966 – Assistant Secretary of Defense Arthur Sylvester admits that the North Vietnamese city of Nam Dinh has been hit by U.S. planes 64 times since mid-1965, and that the air strikes were directed only against military targets: railroad yards, a warehouse, petroleum storage depots, and a thermal power plant. He denounced New York Times correspondent Harrison Salisbury’s reports on the results of the air raids in North Vietnam as “misstatements of fact”;
1975 – 11 Killed, 75 injured in a terrorist bombing at La Guardia Airport in New York City.
