Albuquerque — Today Governor Susana Martinez announced her appointment of Gregory J. Fouratt as Secretary for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS). Fouratt has nearly 17 years of experience as a federal prosecutor, where he prosecuted a wide variety of crimes, from drug trafficking and racketeering to violent crimes such as assault, child abuse and homicide. Fouratt also retired as a lieutenant colonel after having served for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve and the New Mexico Air National Guard.
“Greg Fouratt is an effective leader with tremendous legal, law enforcement and military experience. His talents and skills will serve New Mexico well in our continuing efforts to keep our families and communities safe. I am extremely proud to have Greg continue his service to New Mexicans, this time as a member of my state cabinet,” said Governor Susana Martinez.
Governor Martinez appointed Fouratt to serve as DPS cabinet secretary after former Cabinet Secretary Gorden Eden, Jr. was selected to lead the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) as chief of police.
“I am honored and humbled to have Governor Martinez’s support and confidence in this new role. I am looking forward to working with the Governor and our state’s dedicated public safety employees. New Mexico is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family, and I am grateful for this opportunity to continue working to make it even better,” said Fouratt.
Prior to this appointment by Governor Martinez, Fouratt served as senior litigation counsel in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, where he investigated and prosecuted cases of national and international scope, including capital murder and major fraud. He was also the United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico from 2008 to 2010. In addition to his 17-year career as a federal prosecutor, Fouratt served as an officer in the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and the New Mexico National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2012. Fouratt holds a Juris Doctor degree from Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock, Texas, a Master of Public Administration degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
