The Albuquerque Journal is reporting in this morning’s edition that Plutonium has been detected outside the WIPP facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is the first time plutonium is believed to have leaked outside from within the nuclear waste facility. It is also the highest levels of plutonium ever detected near the nuclear waste storage in its 15 years of operation. Plutonium causes cancer when inhaled or consumed. The Journal reports that the level of Plutonium is still below what the EPA considers ‘actionable levels’, whatever that means to us common folk. This is an issue that should concern us all. There is a lot more we need to know about this situation and the safety of this facility. I pray this is on the radar of the Governor and Legislature.
