(Washington, DC) –Where are the rights of the states? The federal government will recognize same-sex marriages performed last Saturday in Michigan. Attorney General Eric Holder said the couples will be eligible for “all relevant federal benefits on the same terms as other same-sex marriages.” It is similar to a directive Holder issued for same-sex marriages in Utah in January, pending the outcome of court appeals. Holder’s decision follows an announcement by Michigan’s Republican Governor Rick Snyder that his state will not recognize the marriages of about 300 same-sex couples last Saturday.
