Waiting For Help

Several months ago, my daughter had an adenoidectomy that resulted in a large medical bill.  Though we have insurance coverage, we were encouraged to register for supplemental insurance that would help defray the cost.  55 days later, I still do not have an answer as to whether or not we will be approved or denied.  Deciding I had to just bite the bullet, I went down to the Human Services Department.

I could easily share the frustration of that inefficient, problematic office. But, anyone who’s ever been there, already knows this reality first hand.  Instead, I have a challenge for a church or ministry group that’s looking to make a impact on our society.

Before I even got into the main doors, I had a 40 minute wait outside.  I was cold and uncomfortable. So was everyone else.  A young mom was yelling at her toddler, pausing to curse the crowd when some unfriendly glances were directed toward her.  Two men who appeared to be homeless, passed by and made their way into the building.

I watched many people in their 20’s pass by, covered in neck tattoos.  There was man with a hole in his pants.  There was a young dad getting angry with the security guard because he had waited an hour past his appointment time.  There was a sea of people, all unhappy.

It donned on me that this would be a great place for ministry.  I don’t even know if a church group would be allowed through the doors, but armed with snacks, crayons and coloring books, love and the hope of Jesus, that waiting room could be transformed!

I’m aware that most people (myself included) must work during the standard operating hours of a place like the Human Services Department.  Yet, if there was a group of individuals who could share some Good News in a place of tiresome waiting, you may find a captive audience.

This experience once again opens my eyes to the fact that ministry can happen anywhere, at any time.  Even, while waiting for help.
