CHICAGO – An American pediatrician who was killed when an Afghan security guard opened fire Thursday at a Kabul hospital “always had a desire to be the hands and feet of Christ,” according to his wife of 34 years.
Dr. Jerry Umanos was one of three American doctors gunned down at the hospital operated by the Christian charity Cure International. The other two doctors were a father and son. An American nurse also was wounded.
Umanos’ widow, Jan Schuitema, told reporters outside their Chicago home that her husband “was always a light for Christ, and he had a love and commitment that he expressed for the Afghan people because of that love for Christ.”
When he wasn’t training young doctors in Afghanistan, Umanos would periodically return to Chicago to work in a Christian clinic on the city’s southwest side.
