LYNCHBURG, Va. – Todd Burpo says he waited years to write about his four-year-old son Colton’s near-death experience and visions of heaven.
The Nebraska pastor is the author of “Heaven Is For Real,” which has been made into a movie starring Greg Kinnear. It opens in theaters this week.
In a March 26 appearance at Liberty University, Burpo said his son met Jesus and deceased relatives, including a sister he never knew about who was miscarried. Burpo said he waited to write the book to protect his son from mockery and threats that have forced the family to place security cameras around their home.
The Rev. Burpo said God finally convinced him that it was a story others needed to hear.
The release of “Heaven Is For Real” comes on the heels of box office success for “Son of God” and other faith-based films. “Noah” and “God’s Not Dead” have been in the box office top 10 for weeks, ranking sixth and seventh in ticket sales this past weekend.
