(Los Angeles, CA) — A veteran Los Angeles police sergeant is suing the city over his religion. Sgt. A.J. DeBellis, who joined the LAPD in 1990, filed a complaint last week in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging discrimination, harassment and retaliation. DeBellis says he had been made to sit through sit through a recital of a Christian prayer and that religious music was played during most of the event. As a practicing Wiccan, DeBellis says he was deeply offended, and after he let the powers that be know, he says he received an unexpected shift change. DeBellis is seeking unspecified damages and the LAPD is not talking.
