He ruled that same-sex couples who seek to marry in the state can do so, and same-sex marriages from other states will be recognized. He also compared the state’s ban on those marriages to school segregation laws. He wrote, quote, “we are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history.” The ruling comes from a lawsuit challenging the ban as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
