Freedom is not free and we here at FGGAM would like to take the opportunity on this Armed Forces Day to offer a special salute and a very special thanks to all the very special “Gold Star” families out there. Your sacrifice for our country is “Above and Beyond”!!!
For those who don’t know, perhaps you’ve traveled by a house and noticed a banner with a gold star hanging in the window or you have seen the emblem on a car passing by. In some instances, you may see more than one gold star affixed. Curious, you wonder what the gold star means.
The gold star represents a military family member who was killed in action. For example, banners, also called service flags, containing two gold stars indicates two servicemembers from that particular family were killed in combat.
For families who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice, displaying the banners year-round is a solemn way to honor and pay tribute to their loved one(s).
As a retired service member, each time I see the star, I offer a very personal and appreciative salute!!!
