Pop singer Sir Elton John believes that Jesus would have supported sexual immorality and formalized recognition of same sex marriage were He to walk the earth today even though such activity is a clear violation of God’s commands.
The openly gay musician, who plans to marry his civil partner David Furnish next year in a “very quiet” ceremony, said that rules preventing gay clergy from marrying and requiring Catholic priests to be celibate were “old and stupid things”.
He told Sky News’s Murnaghan programme: “The church hierarchy, the traditionalists, might be up in arms about it but times have changed.
“If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen.
“He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about.”
Such statements are inherently contradictory in their logic. What is a “Christian person” and can one be forgiven if they do not stop the behavior they are asking forgiveness for doing.
It is often assumed that Jesus came to correct people’s adherence to the law, putting it away in favor of something “new” namely grace and mercy. This teaching is false. Jesus came to bring people back to a proper understanding of the word of God. He taught that the law went even deeper than what we do with our hands, but also what we do with our hearts and minds.
Sir Elton said he believed the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, was “doing a good job” and Pope Francis was “wonderful”.
“He’s excited me so much by his humanity,” the singer said of the pope.
“He’s taken everything down to the humility of faith.
“He’s stripped it down to the bare bones and said it’s all basically about love and inclusiveness. That has to be encouraged by the Church of England as well.”
Elton John is saying that when we make it all about love and inclusiveness that we bypass the obedience to God’s word and allow people to live as they please. Again I ask, what is the difference between a follower of Jesus Christ and everyone else if sexual immorality is now permissible?
