Iranian Army Chief of Staff Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi made a hysterical and bizarre speech on Wednesday in which he declared, among other things, that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terror militia which has overrun most of northern Iraq “is Israel’s cover up for distancing the revolutionary forces from Israeli borders and creating a margin of security for the Zionists, and the Zionist media have also admitted this fact.” Also on Wednesday, the leader of Iran’s Basij militia force, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Reza Naqdi, weighed in by declaring that “the scene they have created in Iraq is the result of the United States’ behind-the-scene attempts to sow discord and they are certainly the main mastermind of these events.” Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry told NBC News Thursday that the US will upgrade its cooperation with Iran to oppose ISIL.
