Mayor Domenic Sarno is the latest mayor to decry refugee resettlement, joining counterparts in New Hampshire and Maine in tensions with the State Department, which helps resettle refugees in communities across America.
About 67,000 Somalis have come to the United States in the past decade, seeking refuge from civil war. Most have settled in Minnesota, California, Georgia and Washington, D.C.
Border Patrol shelves plans for California flights from Texas
SAN DIEGO- The Border Patrol on Sunday canceled flights scheduled to bring nearly 300 Central American Immigrants from south Texas to California for processing, but the plans could be reinstated. ….
It was unclear why Monday’s flights for San Diego and were shelved.
The government has been struggling to cope with a surge of Central Americans entering Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, where the Border Patrol has made more than 174,000 arrests since Oct.
The government is planning a 700-bed center in Artesia, New Mexico, that U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce said would be only for families. Pearce, said that the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia could house families but was not equipped to accommodate unaccompanied children.
