Kerry’s Whine
The Obama Administration is in a tizzy this morning over the bad press it is getting in Israel. There are hurt feelings at the White House and State Department because Secretary of State Kerry’s efforts at a ceasefire have been rejected across the entire Israeli political spectrum from left to right. One Israeli official prompted more whining when he was quoted saying, “Please Secretary Kerry, just leave us alone.”
The official White House line, faced with universal criticism by a united Israeli public, is, “This is not the way that partners and allies treat each other.” Do they really want to go there?
For the last five years they have done everything but treat Israel as an ally. In the current Hamas-initiated war, the White House sent Kerry out to the tell the world that we would be happy to “mediate” between the two sides. Is that what an ally would do?
In the early days of World War II, when Great Britain was locked in a death struggle with Nazi Germany, did FDR offer to “mediate” between Churchill and Hitler? Did we demand a ceasefire? Did we tell England we were troubled by the number of German civilian casualties?
Obama’s hostility to Israel has deep roots extending all the way back to the years he took his family to Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago to hear the sermons of the Jew-hating, Israel-despising, Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
Obama’s hostility to Israel was evident when he took office and made it clear he wanted to reset our foreign policy to be closer to the Muslim world. He has worked to do just that for nearly six years, and the result is a Middle East in flames.
Remember March 2010? Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived at the White House for talks on the issue of Israeli homes in Judea and Samaria. When Netanyahu didn’t cave, insiders say Obama walked out on him to have dinner in private. No photographs of Obama and the prime minister were allowed. Is that how you treat an ally?
In 2011, an open mic at a G-20 meeting picked up then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy telling Obama that he could not “stand” Prime Minister Netanyahu and calling him a liar. Did Obama defend our ally? No. Obama reportedly said: “You’re fed up with him but I have to deal with him every day.”
In 2012, Obama refused to meet with Netanyahu on the Iranian nuclear threat when both men were at a U.N. conference in New York.
This year, just days after three Israeli teenagers were murdered, Obama penned a guest editorial for an Israeli newspaper. In it he strongly and repeatedly praised Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas’ commitment to peace. Netanyahu was mentioned once and only in passing.
Obama and Kerry have repeatedly leaned on Israel while they appeased the Muslim Brotherhood and the mullahs of Iran. It is difficult to take their “hurt feelings” over criticism from Israel seriously.
Israel Hits Gaza Power Plant: How Dare They?
Breathless reporters all day have been trumpeting the latest alleged war crime by Israel — it knocked out the lights in Gaza. Oh, the horror! Here is the real story: Israel, showing incredible restraint, waited until now to hit the plant!
Does anyone recall that on July 9th, three long weeks ago, Hamas fired three rockets aimed at Israel’s Dimona NUCLEAR power plant in southern Israel? They bragged about it! Even though they missed — this time — they were willing to spread nuclear radiation over a wide area of Israel.
Russia, Hamas and Civilian Airlines
The world was shocked a few weeks ago when Russian-sponsored separatists in Ukraine shot down a civilian airliner killing all on board. President Obama expressed some outrage over that barbarism and roundly condemned the attack on civilian aviation.
You can imagine my surprise then when on July 11th Hamas fired rockets at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv in an obvious effort to kill and terrorize civilian air travelers. On that one, Obama decided on immediate punishment — for Israel by banning all U.S. flights until he backed down after heavy pressure.
Two Schools
Two schools are in the news today. One, a school the U.N. says was being used as a bomb shelter for Gazans, was bombed today. The other school, also in Gaza, was discovered sheltering Hamas rockets that are being fired into Israel every day spreading terror. This is the third Gaza school used to shelter rockets.
Unbelievably, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) returned the rockets discovered in the first two schools to local Palestinian police, i.e. Hamas! No word on whether they will do so this time.
It is tragic that civilians, including some children, were killed in the bombed school. But the responsibility for those deaths resides with Hamas, which is clearly using schools, mosques and hospitals to stockpile weapons. UNRWA also bears responsibility as it chooses to be clueless at best, and complicit at worst, in the use of children as human shields by Hamas.
