Syrian Opposition Fumbles As Polio Epidemic Grows

Map-Syria and neighbors (Illustrative)The opposition to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad got a little more chaotic on Tuesday when the Western-backed National Coalition of Syrian voted to force out its “interim government” and form a new one within a month. The effort to create a government in waiting to take over when and if the regime is toppled has long been hobbled by internal rivalries and a lack of support from armed factions on the ground inside Syria. “Things are heading toward a crisis that will lead to weakening the opposition’s position even more,” lamented one opposition politician. “There is no clear strategy.” Meanwhile, health officials have warned that the growing number of polio cases among Syrian children threatens the entire region with an epidemic of the disease. Read More
