Another Tunnel Problem?
Israel may be able to destroy in five weeks tunnels that Hamas took five years to build. That’s a victory for the Jewish state and a setback for the terrorist group that runs Gaza. But there are reports that another terrorist group—Hezbollah, operating out of Lebanon–is building a similar network of tunnels. There are chilling reports that Israeli residents close to the border between Israel and Lebanon have complained for years about hearing noises under schools and other buildings. Unfortunately, Hezbollah is many times stronger than Hamas.
This again highlights that while much of the media have portrayed the people of Gaza as being hemmed in by Israel, it is really Israel that’s surrounded, because on every border it faces a government or jihadist terrorist group dedicated to its destruction. And looming just over the horizon is Iran and its mullahs, who regularly promise their followers a second holocaust for the Zionists as well as the destruction of the United States.
What’s Next?
The cease-fire Israel was pressured into making on Friday, which was supposed to last seventy-two hours, lasted only three hours. Hamas broke it with an attack on Israeli soldiers through one of its tunnels.
Israel is understandably upset. Several media outlets are reporting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Secretary of State John Kerry in a phone call “not to ever second guess me again” on how to deal with Hamas.
We can confirm from several sources in and out of the Israeli government that, frustrated by constant pressure to agree to a cease-fire, Israel is pulling back large numbers of ground troops, while trying to establish a buffer along its border with Gaza. Israel is reportedly rejecting further negotiations with Hamas in order to finish its campaign against the terror group.
One Israeli diplomat said “there is a growing understanding in the international community that Hamas is not a serious party, and that the assurances it gives are worthless.” Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israel’s military intelligence division, wrote that, “Israel is telling Hamas that they’re not going to get anything.” That’s no airport or seaport, no salaries, no prisoner releases and no reconstruction of Gaza.
Unfortunately, Israel still faces the problem of rocket fire coming from Gaza terrorizing the civilian population. Israeli officials are suggesting that if it continues, they will respond with overwhelming fire power on Hamas targets in Gaza.
