Labor Day Weekend 2014
While one kills, another preserves
While Islamic organizations are taking lives in Africa, The Daily Jot is working to preserve life. Our 22 year partner, Pastor William Agbeti, reports from Ghana: “As West African health ministers meet in Accra, Ghana to discuss strategies for managing the ebola outbreak, our small rural ministry in Ghana has some invaluable lessons to share with them and the world. For several few weeks now, our ministry has been reaching out to over a hundred families and village folks, in the wake of the ebola outbreak, with free ebola prevention materials (EPF) and critical education programs on cleanliness. Many of those we reached and visited with have confessed that this was the first time they had actually received direct medical help from the city center. They also learned about critical details of cholera and ebola for the first time.
“Next week, our small team heads out again to another remote village with EPF materials. This village is only reachable by dug-out canoe. Our observations as we reach out to these poor folks are that there seems to be a missing link in the global and sub-regional fight against ebola. At the international and West African fronts a lot is being done to contain the situation. Unfortunately, these efforts are not trickling down to the villages. For the global fight to become holistic, there is need to involve rural West Africa. If organizations such as ours do not go down to these areas, not much help will reach them. That is why you do do not have to sit down unconcerned. We humbly ask you to continue to assist us to help the less fortunate.
“President John Mahama of Ghana has said at the ongoing meeting in Accra that the world should focus on containment of the disease. That is a good advice. We believe if there is any smart thing to do now, we must head towards the rural areas fast with help. Why? Here is just one example: If research findings are anything to go by, then let us remember that the flying bats, which are said to be primary carriers of ebola virus are trapped, slaughtered and shipped from rural West Africa to the city centers for consumption. Should there be any outbreak in rural West Africa, we may not be able to manage the situation owing to personal and public hygienic conditions there.

“As Governments focus on containment in urban areas, let’s beware that prevention should be the first line of defense against ebola, from the rural front. We need all the help we can get to continue with our exercise in preventing a possible global catastrophe from happening, beginning in the rural areas.” Your assistance in this effort to reach the rural bush areas of Ghana with life sustaining EPF materials and THE GOSPEL, has proven invaluable to these people who the government and churches in Ghana overlook. As Jesus said in Matthew 25:24, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.”

As we celebrate our holiday in America, there are many who have very little to celebrate. Your support to date has helped many who have no idea what to do. Our efforts may be the making of the hedge that protects West Africa from the spread of this horrible disease, as Ghana is the nation in between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, where there have been outbreaks and deaths.
