There were dramatic developments in Iraq over the weekend as Kurdish fighters, with air support from US strike aircraft, beat back gunmen from the Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS) terror militia and took control over most of the Mosul Dam complex in northern Iraq. The Kurdish Peshmerga fighters also took back several villages recently lost to IS earlier this month. “U.S. Central Command conducted these strikes under authority to support humanitarian efforts in Iraq, as well as to protect critical infrastructure, U.S. personnel and facilities, and support Iraqi security forces and Kurdish defense forces, who are working together to combat” IS, said a Pentagon statement.
