Artesia protestersIt is being called the largest protest of its kind ever held in Artesia by local police. Of course, Artesia, New Mexico only has a little more than 11,000 residents, so a few hundred would seem like a lot.

Currently, more than 600 women and children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are detained at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia while they await either deportation or asylum.

Protesters on both sides of the immigration issue gathered to oppose the detention of Central American citizens being held for crossing America’s border outside of the legal entry points. They are being held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia.

The union backed immigrant activist group Somos Un Pueblo Unido rallied for an end to deportations and United States sovereign borders. Somos Un Pueblo Unido or We are the United People is backed by many of the union groups behind Occupy Wall Street. Their intentions are suspect to say the least.

Somos Un Pueblo Unido protesters called for the detainees to be free. The argument is that America should not expect to have control over it’s borders. The US should allow the free migration of peoples from one country to another without unnatural impediments like pesky laws. Try that in China or Russia.

Artesia also saw many protesters who believe that people crossing the borders of the US without permission should not be held in the Artesia detention center but should be immediately returned to their country of origin.

The illegal entry of migrants in the United States is an emotional issue because no one wants to endanger the lives of women and children being used as cover for more dangerous crimes such as drug trafficking and terrorism.

However, no one wants thousands of people entering the country in direct violation of the law. Such lawlessness teaches a total disregard for other American laws, entry without background checks and new strains of deadly diseases.

Case in point, arrivals and deportations at the facility are currently on hold after an unknown number of detainees were diagnosed with new strains of chicken pox.
