The battle in northern Iraq between forces loyal to the Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS) terror militia and Kurdish peshmerga fighters raged on Monday, with attack aircraft flown by pilots loyal to the regime of Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki in Baghdad joining the fight against IS, along with Kurdish fighters from Syria. An estimated 200,000 civilians have been displaced by the fighting, according to the UN. “IS does not have that many weapons but their propaganda is very effective,” said one refugee. “In Sinjar, they sent messages saying they would occupy the town within an hour and so everybody fled.” Meanwhile, intense fighting also continued between IS fighters and the Lebanese Army in the border region just a few tens of kilometers north of the Israeli border.
