Of Atheist bullies, inane judges, schools and God

The First Amendment reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” On March 15, 1982, President Ronald Reagan said, “The first amendment was not written to protect the American people from religion; the first amendment was written to protect the American people from government tyranny.” On September 25, 1982, Reagan said,”To prevent those who believe in God from expressing their faith is an outrage…The relentless drive to eliminate God from our schools…should be stopped.”

As we begin football season, several schools have trampled on the rights of coaches, students, student athletes and even parents by attempting to ban prayer before, during and after games. For example, the Washington Times has reported that Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation successfully bullied Orange County Florida school district to ban local ministers, team chaplains, even references to biblical verses on school property. Coaches and teachers are also prohibited from being present at or participating in student-led prayers. The same organization has sent letters to other school districts in Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee threatening law suits for such activities.

I have coached basketball and football for over 40 years. Wherever I was at and whatever team I coached, either myself, another coach, a parent, or an athlete led prayer before the game and after the game. Often we prayed during the game. I have seen lives transformed because of the Christian presence on our teams. My former athletes often tell me about how our coaching and dedication to the Lord changed them at critical points. In training college and pro football athletes, there is no doubt that faith and prayer is a part of many of their lives. Parents, students, coaches, teachers, and administrators in our public schools should openly disobey any court that tells them they cannot exercise their First Amendment rights of religious freedom. Herein, the courts are wrong and have absolutely no authority.

First Amendment protection for the free exercise of religion is obvious–for anywhere, anytime and anybody. A pompous judge or a radical atheist group has no say as the Constitution is the law of the land. Judges who rule against the First Amendment should be removed from office as they are not upholding the Constitution according to their oath of office. No American should submit to such tyranny. When the Sadducees in Acts banned and imprisoned Peter and the apostles from teaching in the name of Jesus, first the prisons couldn’t hold them and “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.” Silence and inaction in the face of tyranny is consent.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!
