New Mexico Economy: Albuquerque’s Sunport Losing Customers

ALBUQUERQUE –Is this a statement on the New Mexico economy?  It’s the biggest airport in the state, the Albuquerque International Sunport. Built 75-years-ago, pictures show the place was a booming business packed with travelers. But today, it’s a difference picture. The departure area is nearly empty.

“The numbers are down about 25-percent,”

In 2007, more than 6.5 million people flew in or out of the Sunport. Last year, there were only 5 million.

In the last five years, the airport has lost more than 25-percent of its flights, because airlines say the demand just isn’t there.

The Albuquerque “International” Sunport also doesn’t have any “international flights” any more.
