The US-led coalition battling the Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS) terror militia kept up kinetic strikes on IS positions in Syria and Iraq Monday even as retired US General John Allen, who is coordinating the campaign against IS, called for the fight to be expanded to the internet, where he said IS “recruits and perverts the innocent.” He added that “It is only when we contest (IS)’s presence online, deny the legitimacy of the message it sends to vulnerable young people… it is only then that it will truly be defeated.” Meanwhile, a suicide bomb attack at a checkpoint south of Baghdad killed 14 Iraqi soldiers and allied Shi’ite militiamen on Monday, adding to the high level of violence throughout the region. However, there was a bright spot on Monday as Lebanese Army troops retook control of the northern city of Tripoli.
