Egyptian authorities took the extraordinary step Tuesday of ordering residents of communities near the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to evacuate their homes so they can be demolished as part of an effort to create a buffer zone with the Strip. The zone will be part of a wider effort to crack down on the smuggling of weapons and other contraband between the Strip and Egyptian territory which has come in the wake of a terror attack last Friday which killed 33 Egyptian soldiers and which Egyptian authorities said terrorists based in the Strip were partially responsible for.
