French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told RTL radio Tuesday that the number of French nationals travelling to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS) terror militia is already approaching 1,000 and is climbing rapidly. Thousands of people from other Western countries are also believed to be fighting with IS and there has already been cases of individuals returning from the fight to carry out or plan terrorist attacks in their countries of origin. Meanwhile, rebel factions in Syria are voicing growing opposition to the US-led campaign of air strikes against IS there, threatening the US strategy of enlisting rebel fighters to provide ground forces to follow up on those air strikes.
