New Mexicans can start casting ballots in general election races with Election Day   several weeks away…..

Voters can go to their county clerk’s office starting today to cast ballots. Today is  also the final day for New Mexicans to register to vote  .

Election Day is Nov. 4.

FGGAM also just received this news release from New Mexico Secretary of State Dianna Duran:

The Secretary of State reminds voters that today is the last day to register to vote for the November 4 General Election.   A voter registration form will be accepted (and the registered voter will be eligible for the upcoming election) if the registration form is:

1)      dated by today, Tuesday, October 7, and received by the county clerk not later than

5:00 P.M. on Friday, October 10; or

2)    postmarked today and mailed to the county clerk or secretary of state; or

3)    accepted at any state agency, such as the Motor Vehicle Division or the Human Services Department, by 5:00 P. M. today.

Also today, county clerks will begin mailing absentee ballots to those voters who have requested them.    Voters can request an absentee ballot by submitting an absentee ballot request to their county clerk’s office in person, or by mail.

Also beginning today, voters can begin voting in person at all county clerk’s offices throughout the state.  Early voting at additional locations in many counties will begin on Saturday, October 18.

As a reminder to New Mexico voters, and newcomers to the state:  Photo voter ID is not required by New Mexico law.   The only requirement is that voters state their name, address and year of birth.

However, Secretary of State Dianna Duran had this reminder for voters:

“While showing a photo ID is not required by law, doing so can help voters ensure that they receive the correct ballot, and that the correct name is crossed off the list.  This could help prevent identity theft, and prevent an ineligible voter from voting in the place of an eligible voter.  Voters should remember that they can, for identity protection purposes, voluntarilychoose to show an ID.”
