Tensions Remain High In Jerusalem Following Amman Meeting

Jerusalem (ICEJ Staff photograph)Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas “must stop the incitement that leads to violence.” He added that the PA’s official media had called for a “day of rage” on Friday, violating a promise Abbas had made to him and visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry to try to calm tensions in the capital during a meeting last Thursday in Amman, Jordan. He also reiterated Israel’s position that it will not change the status quo on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, adding that the baseless accusations to the contrary by the PA and other Islamist factions were stoking tensions. Meanwhile, a Jewish Israeli man was stabbed in the back with a screwdriver as he walked along Jerusalem’s Hanevi’im Street Sunday evening, with the suspected attacker fleeing towards the Jaffa Gate to the Old City.
