John WranaFrom Markham, Ill.: A suburban Chicago Police Officer had better and safer options than to fire beanbags to subdue a 95 year old WW II Veteran, a prosecutor told the court yesterday at the outset of the officer’s trial on a felony reckless conduct charge in the Veterans death.

With all their equipment, training and common sense, Craig Taylor and the other Park Forest Officers did not have to storm into John Wrana’s room at an assisted living center on July 26, 2013, Cook County State’s Attorney Lynn McCarthy said during her opening statements. They did so, though, and Taylor ended up firing five beanbags at the 95 year old Veteran, John Wrana, including the fatal one that struck him in his abdomen and caused internal bleeding. Taylor’s attorney countered that Taylor did what he was trained to do to subdue a dangerous suspect who was coming at him with a knife. Taylor, 43, could face up to three years in prison if he’s convicted.

There has to be a better way to subdue a 95 year old man! I wholeheartedly agree with the Cook County State’s Attorney about common sense.

Someone needs to change the training manual in dealing with the elderly and mentally ill! When did this training manual change? When I was in Chicago in May after the killing here in Albuquerque by Police, of mentally ill James Boyd, I asked a Chicago Police Officer what happened to wounding a suspect by shooting them in the shoulder, arm, hand, or leg? He told me they are not trained to do that anymore, the target is the head, a bulls eye. The Officer explained to me one reason for that is that so many crooks wear full body Armour, just like the suspect in last nights Police shooting in Albuquerque. UPDATE: shoot, kill suspect after he allegedly fired at officers. Was wearing body armor, per APD.
