Special Message

I am headed to Capitol Hill to sit in the House gallery for what I believe will be an incredibly important historical address to a joint session of Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. I will give you a full report later this afternoon. But there are a few urgent domestic policy items that you need to know about.

Leviathan Unleashed?

Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is urging President Obama to raise corporate taxes through executive action. Sanders believes Obama could squeeze $100 billion from U.S. businesses with just his phone and his pen.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was asked about this yesterday. Consider his response:

“The president has certainly not indicated any reticence about using his executive authority to try to advance an agenda that benefits middle-class Americans . . . The president has asked his team to examine the array of executive authorities that are available to him to try to make progress on his goals. So I’m not in a position to talk about this in any detail at this point, but the president’s very interested in this avenue, generally.”

We’ve tried to explain to friends in the business community that they were making a mistake by cooperating with this administration — whether it was by cutting deals over Obamacare or turning a blind eye to his use of executive actions on abortion, marriage or immigration, even if it boosted their balance sheets or accomplished their desire of maintaining a supply of cheap labor.

The separation of powers — the restraint of government — is what makes America unique as a constitutional republic. But Obama has unleashed a potential monster that will be difficult to restrain, and it’s no surprise that he is being goaded on by a big government socialist.

Just because some extra constitutional actions may benefit you, you will have no recourse when that monster turns and bites you. As has often been said, the government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.

Unfortunately, some conservatives in Congress seem convinced that Obama is trying to goad them into overreacting. They swear they won’t fall for his tricks. But has anybody thought this through?

If not “falling for his tricks” means continuing on with business as usual, that means Obama can do anything he wants for the next two years. He will change the country in ways that may well be irreversible.

Hillary’s Email Scandal

The New York Times has a major story today noting that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton likely violated government rules by not using an official email account while she served at the State Department. According to the Times, Clinton “exclusively used a personal email account to conduct government business. . . . Mrs. Clinton did not have a government email address during her four-year tenure at the State Department.”

Many government officials maintain personal and government addresses. This is worse. Hillary maintained only a personal email address and never bothered to set up an official account, a likely violation of the Federal Records Act.

This revelation goes a long way toward explaining why the Benghazi investigation has been so difficult. The Times report adds, “It was only two months ago . . . that Mrs. Clinton’s advisers reviewed tens of thousands of pages of her personal emails and decided which ones to turn over to the State Department.”

No doubt Rep. Trey Gowdy’s Select Committee will be very interested in this news. A subpoena should be issued immediately before Hillary’s hard drive crashes!
