Arab Response to Regional Crises Mixed

The Saudi-led response to Iranian-backed Houthi rebel groups in Yemen continued on Tuesday with airstrikes on numerous rebel-held positions, but hopes for a longer-term coalescence of interests between Saudi Arabia and other Middle East powers such as Egypt and Turkey remain in doubt. Often competing interests in other regional conflicts, including the multi-faceted civil wars in Syria, Iraq and Libya, as well as disagreements over the best approach to confrontations with Israel, Iran and macro relations with the US, European powers, Russia and China, have been temporarily put on hold while the military effort in Yemen continues. But analysts have warned that the alliance is fragile. Meanwhile, a Chinese naval flotilla docked in the Yemeni port of Aden on Monday to evacuate Chinese citizens from the country, as dozens of warplanes from Arab countries carried out attacks on Houthi positions around the country.
