The European Union was swift to congratulate incumbent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the convincing victory his Likud faction won in Tuesday’s Israeli parliamentary elections, with EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini issuing a statement Wednesday morning saying she looks forward to working with the new Israeli government “on a mutually beneficial relationship as well as on the relaunch of the peace process.” She added that that “we are at a crucial moment, with many threats all over the Middle East” adding that the EU “staunchly supports a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in the interest of the Israeli people, of the Palestinian people and of the whole region.
