Iran Legislation Proceeding in U.S. Senate Despite Opposition

Flags of the US and Iran (GRAPHIC)The US Senate leadership decided over the weekend to proceed with legislation to increase sanctions on Iran over its renegade nuclear program despite a request from the Obama Administration not to proceed in the midst of tense negotiations set to resume in Lausanne, Switzerland this week. “On this issue where Congress has played such a vital role,” the senator Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) told the Jerusalem Post, “I believe it is very important that Congress appropriately weigh in before any final agreement is implemented.” Closes close to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee told the Post that the legislation will be taken up on 24 March. “That’s the window the world was given, and Congress is acting within that window,” one Senate aide close to the matter said. “Post March 24 and absent an agreement, there is no mechanism left to further delay the legislative process from moving forward.” Read More
