The drama over negotiations regarding Iran’s renegade nuclear program took another dramatic turn over the weekend when 47 Republican members of the US Senate released a letter they had sent to Iran’s leadership warning that any deal the Obama Administration signs on the issue might not last much longer than the end of his term in January 2017. “Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement,” the letter states. “The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.” Meanwhile, President Obama told CBS over the weekend that he was prepared to “walk away” from negotiations if they failed to produce an acceptable deal and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to reports that the Administration is offering a “nuclear umbrella” to Washington’s Arab allies in case Iran manages to get a nuclear weapon despite all efforts to stop it.
