Democrat First, Catholic Second? By New Mexico Watchman Jose Vasquez
Dear Friends,
In her book, Godless, Ann Coulter states that liberalism is a religion and abortion
is its sacrament.
On the other hand, the Archbishop of Santa Fe, Michael J. Sheehan, and the two other New Mexico Bishops, urged their Catholics priests to speak in favor of the Late Term Abortion Ban and Parental Notification. The legislation passed the New Mexico House of Representatives, with 5 Democrats joining the Republican majority in voting for the legislation on March 5.
In a letter dated February 12, prior to the halfway mark of the current 60 day legislative session, seven Democratic Senators wrote Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez (D-Albuquerque) urging him to allow the Senate to function as a “committee of the whole,” allowing debate on the pro-life legislation being considered by the House.
The letter was written by pro-life advocate Senator Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) and published on stationary belonging to Senator Phil Griego (D-San Jose). Seven Democratic Senators signed the letter and staked out a pro-life position and called for a full Senate debate.
However, the issue came before the Senate on March 10, four weeks later. Despite their previous commitment, all seven Senators voted with the Democratic block to disallow the pro-life legislation from being heard by the full Senate.
In addition it should be noted also that Senator Pete Campos (D-Las Vegas) is a Deacon in the Catholic Church. Senator Campos did not sign the letter and, despite his position in the Catholic Church, voted not to move the pro-life legislation forward.
It should be further noted that Presbyterian Pastor Reverend Dr. Harry Eberts, in the House Regulatory and Public Affairs Committee hearing on February 20, compared eating a ham sandwich to performing an abortion.
We should all pray for consistency in Christian thought and deed.
