Palestinians Evacuated From Camp Amidst Fighting in Syria

Anwar Abdul Hadi, a Palestine Liberation Organization official, told AFP Sunday that around 2,000 Palestinians who remained in the Yarmouk refugee camp in the heart of Damascus had been able to evacuate the area as it has become overrun by the Islamic State (IS) terror militia. IS has surrounded and is in the process of annihilating remnants of several armed Palestinian factions who were attempting to hold their positions in the camp, which until recently had served as a buffer defending the heart of the Assad regime power base in the capital. UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness urged the various factions to “show maximum restraint so other civilians who wish to leave can be evacuated.” However, all sides in the conflict continued to pound the area over the weekend with heavy artillery and rockets in a furious battle which they view as possibly decisive in the ongoing conflict.
