As the shooting war in Yemen raged on Tuesday, a war of words was also heating up between Saudi Arabia, which is leading a coalition of mostly Arab countries in launching airstrikes on the Houthi rebels there and Iran, which backs the Houthis and is demanding the Saudi-led campaign stop immediately. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian told reporters in Kuwait that “The fire of war in the region … will drag (in) the whole region to play with fire…this is not in the interest of the nations in the region.” Meanwhile the UN and Red Cross suggested that all sides in the conflict “exercise restraint” as the civilian death toll climbed rapidly and analysts predicted a long, bloody fight in Yemen with no visible end and a possible expansion into a regional Sunni-Shi’ite conflict.
