Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) troops fired warning shots at a Singapore-flagged commercial ship, the Alpine Eternity, in the Persian Gulf on Thursday as part of an attempt to intercept the vessel it has accused of causing damage to an Iranian oil rig on 22 March. “Iran claims that the vessel is liable for damages to the oil platform,” a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP. Following the IRGC’s attempted act of piracy, Coast Guard vessels from the UAE were deployed to the area and the IRGC boats retreated, but it was the third such incident in a week and analysts warned that Iran’s increasingly belligerent behavior is likely to escalate. In related news, the US House of Representatives passed the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 on Thursday, sending the bill to US President Barak Obama to either sign into law or veto.
