An honor guard of at least two officers have attended Benner’s body since his callous murder on May 25th. Rio Rancho residents have created an impromptu memorial near the scene of officer’s death and a motorcade has been arranged for his funeral.
What New Mexican’s should be willing to learn from this loss is that while all lives matter, the life of a police officer is representative of a larger principle.
A police officer represents the community that her or she serves, as a representative the officer is tasked with enforcing the laws of that community and embodies the individual citizens.
So, when a police officer is murdered by an evil person it is the community and it’s laws that have been violated, and we should hold the criminal responsible, once found guilty by a court of law, to a higher degree of punishment.
When we say that we honor officer Gregg “Nigel” Benner, we are saying that we have given his life special weight and meaning that is different than what we give others. This is because he represents us, the collective us.
We should understand that when we do this it gives greater value to all lives within our community and our society and allows for true law and order.
