Massive humanitarian catastrophe grips Yemen
Even as the UN declared the humanitarian situation in Yemen to be a level three disaster this week, with estimates that as much as 80% of the population is in need of aid, armed factions continued to battle each other for control of key cities and infrastructure. Warplanes from a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states bombed Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in the capital of Sa’ana while fierce fighting continued in the southern port city of Aden, where fuel tanks near the port were set on fire by fighting earlier this week and continued to burn into Friday. Additionally, outbreaks of several infectious diseases have been reported among the massive population of internally displaced refugees from the crisis.
