Palestinian rioting (Illustrative)Rioting broke out on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City on Tuesday for the third straight day, as dozens of young Palestinians wearing masks and hurling rocks and firecrackers attacked Israeli police who were escorting Jewish and Christian visitors to the site. The US State Department reacted by issuing formulaic condemnations for “acts of violence” and demands for “restraint from all sides” while Jordan’s King Abdullah issued his own formulaic condemnations for what he called Israel’s “acts of aggression against Moslem holy sites” in Jerusalem. “Any more provocation in Jerusalem will affect the relationship between Jordan and Israel,” Abdullah said. “Jordan will not have a choice but to take actions, unfortunately.” Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu planned to convene and emergency security cabinet meeting at the close of the Rosh Hashanah holiday on Tuesday evening to address the situation.
