Even as Russian military units rushed to reinforce the beleaguered Assad regime positions in Damascus and the Alawite heartland along Syria’s Mediterranean coast, the Islamic State (IS) terror militia advanced on regime positions east of the capital, capturing a missile facility along with other heavy weapons. Opposition groups reported heavy fighting around the Deir El Zour military base with heavy casualties on all sides. Meanwhile, reports have confirmed that large formations of Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps troops have landed in western Syria to reinforce Russian units deployed to set up facilities for servicing jet aircraft and combat helicopters. “I can’t see the Russian presence as changing the balance of power,” an Israeli analyst said. “It will apparently prolong the fighting.
