There are at least 60 groups across the U.S. and groups in Italy, Britain. and Australia that are joining Stop Predatory Gambling, our national organization, in a National Day (or week) of Action. Some of the groups are having a prayer vigil the whole week of September 19 to September 27. Many groups are having their day on September 26, but New Mexico is having our day on September 19.
We will be meeting in front of the New Mexico Lottery Office at 4511 Osuna Road in Albuquerque, between Jefferson and I-25 (look for the Lottery sign and the driveway). We will start at 10:00 am, and will be having a “Roast” of the NM Lottery by burning discarded “loser” lottery tickets in a grill outside the lottery office.
I will give a five minute “roast,” while we burn the lottery tickets. The whole thing should last about half an hour. Please bring discarded “loser” tickets to add to the roast.
We will be focusing on the fact that the NM Lottery has been promoting legislation that would allow people to purchase lottery tickets on the Internet, or at retail stores with credit and debit cards. We will also be focusing on the fact that the lottery heavily exploits the poor, the uneducated, and minorities.
We also encourage you to bring home-made signs with such themes as:
NO ONLINE LOTTERY SALES
NO DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD LOTTERY SALES
STOP PREDATORY LOTTERY SALES
STOP GOVERNMENT LOTTERY EXPLOITATION
(ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN THINK OF)
