US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters Wednesday following his third conversation in a week with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, that Moscow is proposing “a military-to-military conversation and meeting in order to discuss the issue of precisely what would be done.” He added that “I made clear that Russia’s continued support for (Syrian President Bashar) Assad risks escalating the conflict and undermining our shared goal of fighting extremism.” Meanwhile, Assad gave an interview with Russian media on Wednesday in which he said, among other things, that European governments have only themselves to blame for the mass exodus of Syrians into their countries because they have refused to support his regime in what he described as its “war against terrorism” for the last four years.
